Photo to Fine Art: Encaustic Photography Intensive - July 4-7

July 4 - 7 (4-day workshop)

Course Summary

This workshop is suitable for new or experienced encaustic artists.

Immerse yourself in the evocative, layered, and story-telling possibilities of photographs secreted beneath the dreamy depths of encaustic wax in this four-day workshop. Explore techniques to print, distress and alter inkjet, LaserJet, fabric, and professionally printed photos, so they possess the qualities of both photograph and hand-painted fine art.

Bathe your photographs and prints in sweet-smelling beeswax, learning encaustic techniques to transfer, colour, fuse, alter, glaze, smooth, texture, highlight and gild images.

Learn encaustic fundamentals: studio set up, safety, tools, techniques, materials and more. Suitable for new and experienced artists alike.

In this workshop, participants will:

  • Learn the Fundamentals: Understand the history and basics of encaustic painting, including safety protocols, tools, and materials.
  • Prepare Photographic Materials: Explore various methods to print and incorporate photographs into encaustic paintings. Learn about paper, fabric, and alternative printing methods and their applications, mounting images on substrates for seamless painting integration.
  • Photo-Alteration and Enhancement: Utilize reductive distressing methods such as scratching and sanding and alternative printing techniques to reveal underlying layers, add texture, depth, and a sense of history to your images.
  • Master Image Transfers: Develop skills in transferring photographic images directly onto wax surfaces, creating ethereal and layered effects.
  • Explore Layering Techniques, Texture and Tools: Experiment with building up translucent and opaque layers of translucent and coloured waxes to add depth and dimension to artwork. Carve into your work to layer complexity, and master tools that add raised lines and 3D tactility.
  • Incorporate Mixed Media and Collage: Enhance your pieces by embedding collage elements, stamps, and other effects into the wax, resulting in complex and personalized compositions.
  • Work Large: Learn methods to incorporate imagery into larger encaustic paintings.
  • Understand Composition and Design: Discuss the elements and principles of design and how they relate to your work and concepts.

By the end of this intensive workshop, you will have created a series of unique encaustic photographic and painterly artworks expanding your creative vision and  pictorial concepts.
