Course Summary

This workshop is suitable for new or experienced encaustic artists.

Discover exciting ways to create evocative mixed media collaged and textured three-dimensional encaustic paintings. In this four-day workshop, you’ll explore a variety of encaustic and compatible paints, inks, mixed media, and collage materials that will make your work shine with magical depth, texture, and translucency.

Try colouring, carving, layering, printing, and three-dimensionally texturing your encaustic surface with a variety of wax, oil, and chalk pigments as well as mastering hot tools, stamps, stencils, and myriad encaustic applications.

Learn encaustic fundamentals: studio set up, safety, tools, techniques, materials, and more. Delight your inner artist in this fun and supportive environment. Suitable for new and experienced artists alike.

NOTE: Returning and experienced encaustic students will learn new techniques and receive one-on-one instruction to further deepen their encaustic and artistic practice.

All tools and materials provided, except boards. 

Workshop Highlights:

  • Encaustic Fundamentals: Gain a solid foundation in studio setup, safety protocols, essential tools, and materials.
  • Mixed Media Collage: Discover innovative ways to combine encaustic-compatible paints, inks, and collage materials to craft compelling compositions. 
  • Surface Design Tools and Techniques: Experiment with specialized hot tools, colouring, carving, and layering to add molten hues, texture, and dimension to your pieces. 
  • Three-Dimensional Assemblage: Learn to incorporate natural materials and 3D objects, embedding them seamlessly into your encaustic surfaces.
  • Advanced Applications: Explore the use of text, stamps, stencils, and metallic accents to enhance your artwork's visual appeal.
  • Work Large: Learn tricks to paint larger encaustic work.
  • Understand Composition and Design: Discuss the elements and principles of design and how they relate to your work and vision. 

Students will complete approximately six 8” x 10” paintings, several sample boards, and one larger painting, providing a diverse portfolio of techniques and finished pieces.

Class size is limited to 8 students for personalized attention.
All supplies provided by instructor, with the exception of cradled wooden panels, to be provided by student or purchased for a nominal fee from instructor.  

Light snacks and drinks provided.    

Accessibility: Elevator available on weekdays 8 am to 3:30 pm. Weekend students are required to climb two flights of stairs. Please advise instructor if accessibility is a concern.

Registration is confirmed with full payment. Please note fees are refundable up to one month before the class date, but are subject to a $35 CAD administration fee.  Cancellations less than one month before class date are non-refundable unless your spot can be filled by a waitlisted student. Non-refundable cancellations by student will be credited and can be applied to another workshop or to purchase artwork.

Classes run 10 AM- 4PM. Class size is limited to 8 students, for personalized attention. A minimum of four students is required to run classes. 

All tools and materials provided* except substrate boards.

Shary’s professional studio is fully equipped with all workshop supplies* including: encaustic medium, pigmented waxes, paints, inks, mixed media materials, inks, oil sticks, pastels, photographs, embellishments, tools, equipment, and more, as required.

*Students are required to bring six 8 x 10” (or 8 x 8”) and one 16 x 20” wooden panels or these can be purchased from instructor.
 
Detailed class and supplies information provided prior to workshop commencement. Students are welcome to bring their favourite personal materials, tools, ephemera, apron, etc.
